Access Statement for the Southernhay Guesthouse, Bournemouth
Introduction
We endeavour to offer a warm welcome to everyone who visits our small but friendly guesthouse. Part of that welcome is to cater for individual needs, wherever possible. We hope that you find our access statement useful, but if there is anything else that you would like to know, please don’t hesitate to contact us by telephone, e-mail or in writing to our address, the details of which you will find later on in this statement.
The Southernhay
- We have 6 letting rooms, 1 of which is on the ground floor, close to the front door. The remaining 5 rooms are on the first floor, up a flight of 16 stairs, with a banister rail each side. Each stair is 7”(18cm)H, 30”(76cm)W, 9”(23cm)D
- The ground floor room is wheelchair accessible, (manual wheelchairs, but not large, electrically operated ones) The narrowest door into the Southernhay is 78cm wide and the door to the ground floor room is 71cm wide
Pre-Arrival
- We are approximately 1 mile from the centre of Bournemouth.
- Westbourne is ‘just around the corner’ from us and has a range of restaurants, bars and shops. The ground is flat around Westbourne.
- There is a bus stop close to the end of our car park and another in Westbourne, with frequent buses to many destinations
- If travelling by National Express from London, you can buy a ticket to Westbourne, which will drop you at the shops, about 5 minutes away from us
- The travel interchange, which is in the centre of Bournemouth, is 10 minutes from us by car, or Taxi
- Trains, buses, taxis and the National Express coaches all stop at the travel interchange
- We have two cats, one of whom loves to fuss guests, if encouraged
- We do take well-behaved dogs
Arrival and car parking
- Please advise us of your anticipated arrival time so that we can be sure we are here to welcome you
- To ensure the rooms are ready, we usually ask guests to arrive after 12 noon. However, it may be possible to book in earlier, by arrangement
- We have plenty of car parking spaces
- From the car park there are two steps onto a patio and another into the front door
- The patio has wooden seating and tables on it
- The car park and patio area are illuminated during the evening
- We are able to assist with luggage if required
Guest Accommodation – Public area
- A selection of ‘tourist information’ brochures are available in the entrance hall
- Downstairs the hallway leads through to a guest lounge and the dining room
- There is central heating to all areas, which can be adjusted in each room
- Seating is provided in the entrance hall
- The floors are all covered with short-pile carpet
- In warm weather the patio is a pleasant area to use
Dining room and Guest Lounge
- There are 6 tables in the dining room, which are of varying sizes and heights
- Guests help themselves to cereals and juice from a pine dresser
- The English breakfast, tea or coffee and toast is served at the tables
- There is a vegetarian option to the cooked breakfast and we will endeavour to cater for other diets if requested in advance
- Being a vegetarian myself I am very careful that the vegetable products are kept well away from the meat and I use different tools for turning, dishing up etc.
- The local radio station is played in the background during breakfast, which often contains useful traffic information etc.
- Guests are welcome to use the lounge at any time
- In the guest lounge there is a collection of menus from the many restaurants in Westbourne and a selection of reading material
- The guest lounge has leather seating for approx 7 people, including a recliner settee. Extra hard chairs can be brought from the dining room if required
- There is a T.V, DVD and Video players in the guest lounge
Bedrooms
- Four of our bedrooms have en-suite facilities
- One family room and one single room have a wash hand basin in the room, but share a shower and WC room, located just along the corridor
- All bedrooms have central heating with thermostat knobs on each radiator to control the temperature of the room
- Tea and coffee making facilities and hair dryers are provided
- There is a T.V. with remote control in each bedroom
- All beds are made with synthetic duvets and pillows
- There are spare blankets and electric fans in the wardrobes if required
- An iron and ironing board is available on request
- Fresh milk is available if requested
- Storage is provided by a wardrobe, chest of drawers, dressing table and bedside cabinets to each bedroom
Ground Floor –
Guest bedroom 1
- The ground floor room is a family en-suite. It has a double and single bed, with a pull out single bed underneath
- The step into the shower tray is 32cms and the vanity unit around the wash basin is 78cm high
- There are grab rails to the en-suite toilet and shower.
First floor –
Guest bedroom 5
- This is the single standard room. It is located top left of the stairs and has all the facilities of the other rooms, but shares the W.C and shower room with room 6. The bed has access from one side.
Guest bedroom 6
- This is a family standard room with a double and single bed in it. The double bed has access on both sides and the single on one side. Located left at top of the stairs, at the end of the corridor, it has all the facilities of the other rooms but shares the W.C. and shower room with room 5.
Guest bedroom 7
- A double room with recently refurbished en-suite facilities, room 7 is located directly opposite the top of the stairs. This room looks out over gardens at the back of the hotel. The double bed is accessible from both sides.
Guest bedroom 8
- Bedroom 8 is a family, en-suite room with a double and single bed. It is located opposite the top of the stairs to the right. The double bed is accessible from both sides, but the single bed from only one side. This room has white, Louis style furniture, Victorian pictures and overlooks the front of the hotel.
Guest bedroom 9
- A double room with newly refurbished en-suite facilities, room 9 is located to the right of the top of the stairs. The double bed can be accessed from both sides and there is a large, fitted, sliding door wardrobe in this room. Room 9 overlooks the front of the hotel and has a bay, double glazed window, with a small table and 2 chairs.
Shared shower room and W.C
- The fully tiled shared shower room has been newly refurbished with a quadrant shower, W.C. and wash basin. There is also a chair in this room.
Additional Information
- There is a fire extinguisher in the entrance hall and another at the top of the stairs
- We are a totally no smoking hotel and each bedroom has smoke detectors
- The fire alarm rings continuously if evacuation is needed. If you need assistance in an emergency, for any reason, please advise us on arrival
- A small fridge can be made available for medication if required
- There is a folder in each guest bedroom giving extra tourist information about ourselves and the local area
- Further information about our daily and emergency routines can be found in each bedroom on the wall above the dressing tables and on the back of each door respectively

There are cards in the hall with local taxi numbers on them
Payphone: There is a payphone situated to the left of the dining room door.
Future Plans
During 2009 we are planning to re-decorate room 8, adding coving around the ceiling, re-papering the walls and possibly replacing the curtains.
The hallway is to be painted.
